Say It Aint So.......

This has been a challenging week for my little fellas.  I tried to wein them off the frozen blood worms and brine shrimp this week.  Not so good with the results.  I cut back to feeding them once a day to see if they would begin to eat the smaller gold fish.  No such luck.  Instead they took one of their own as a sacrifice.  I was happy because they did eat a real live fish, but why did TuPac have to be the first one to go?  LOL  They had also taken a huge chunk out of the 2nd to the smallest fish (Pac being the smallest) but it didn't seem to effect him.  He had no top fin and there was enough meet missing from there you could see little teeth marks.  I am amazed at how fast these guys heal!  You can tell a new patch of "skin" has grown back, and he has never had any change in his swimming pattern to make you think he was even hurting.  I am curious to see if his top fin will grow back.

Other than the one I lost, all the others are doing great and growing so much.  I hope that in a couple weeks they are eating real fish.  They gulp down the blood worms and for a couple hours after that, they look as if they are pregnant.  Still the first thing that I look at when I get home after work and when I wake up.  Never seems to be a dull moment in that tank, unless you were trying to get them to celebrate the new year!  They didn't want to come out of hiding last night to give any kisses for anything.  Now the true piranha attitude is coming through!

THEY ARE HERE... THEY ARE HERE!!!!

Thursday marked the big day! Since my computer has been in the shop, it was hard to upload a blog with all the excitement and pictures. These seven piranha have been on the prowl!

Here is my lovely tank. The ones in the tank at the moment are the gold fish (prospective food) and the bag is full of the "Lucky 7". After I released the hounds, they didn't know what to do with all the space! They were used to either the over crowded bag that they were sent to the pet store in from the Amazon, or the over crowded fish tank that they resided in the pet shop.

When I got them home, I gave them some Shrimp Brine, and they devoured that. I had to leave for work that night so I left the little guys at home to find for themselves through the night.

After a 12 hour shift I came home to find all the gold fish to have tail wounds and the smallest gold fish didn't make it through the night. He was found belly up, with all fins and scales missing, along with a chunk out of his belly. I was such a proud momma!

The piranha attack the tails of other fish to determine which one is the weakest, and then they will begin to attack the weakest link.... only to say.... GOOD-BYE ;-)

Through out the rest of the week, I fed them the rest of the fresh Shrimp Brine. I was doing yet more research on them and found out the brine can also be found in pellet form. This is much cheaper and MUCH less messy. I have already had to clean the tank twice because of the brine, both frozen and pellets.

Bad photos, but you see my little beasts there. The biggest is a little bigger than a quarter, and the smallest is the size of a dime, and yes, I did have to name the biggest "Biggie" and the smallest "Pac" I couldn't help it!
Since I don't have the proper camera to be able to show you the marking of the Red Belly Piranha, I stole one off the Internet. When the piranha are juveniles, they look like a minnow! They have silver bodies with little black dots all over and their bottom fin is orange. None of mine have the orange by the gills yet. I'm sure this will be coming in the next couple weeks.

Yesterday I went back to my newest favorite place in the city. The pet store! I have been feeding the piranha the pellet brine two-three times a day. I didn't feed them at all yesterday because I was going to go to the store and get "rosie's" which are skinnier gold fish. Once I released the rosie's into the water, the piranha attacked! One little fella didn't make it through the next hour! Biggie wrestled him down and then the others took their turns with the meal.
This is an adult Red Belly Piranha! I love that it looks like one of my nieces or nephews doused it with Elmer's and a layer of glitter!

Since they Lucky Seven have resided in their new home, I have seen changes in them. Pac was pretty beat up, barley had a tail, and already has a full tail grown back and his other fins look better too. He is one of the most shy of the seven, usually the last to surface when I turn on the lights. The first day he didn't really school with the other six, now they have seemed to let him join the school. Which is good for me because if he wouldn't of, he would of most likely been the first to go..... even before the goldfish!

New project.

So... my newest up and coming project........ PIRANHA! Yes I know.... but I can not wait! So, I decided that I would do (or try to do) a weekly journal so I can map the progress of these little burgers. I just saw them for the first time today. They are smaller than the gold fish I have in my tank at the moment to make sure that the water had balanced out.

About a month ago, I bought a 55 gallon fish tank, stand, filter and a couple other supplies from a very nice couple off of craigslist (which has become my new addiction!). What was the damage you might ask? $50. Yes, I am the queen of bargain shopping! I had to drive about 45 minutes one way with my good friend Karle to get the big thing, but it was worth it. Since we took my old truck (the Nissan) and since dad took the stereo and speakers out of it, my big mouth was the entertainment and he knows I will be glad to entertain, since the first words when we got in the truck were- sing it woman!!!

Today, I picked up a dozen gold fish from the pet store, had the man order me some more rocks, got an additional decoration for the tank, and added water. I had gotten a dozen gold fish from wal-mart about a week and a half ago to make sure the water was ok for the piranha, they have been dieing slowly for the last week (because they are cheap, not because of the water) so I decided to flush them and get some fresh ones that came from a man I trusted. So far so good! We will see what the verdict is in the morning.

The "Taiming" of the "Shrew""

For any of you who follow my Cousin Chelsea's blog, you would know that she and her husband, Jay, are going through the adventures of first time home owners!!!!! Since buying their new living quarters she has found countless critters, that I'm sure has given her many shreeks and OMG's, since she is not the country gal that I am! Well, Cousin Chelsea... get out your guns because yesterday, I was the one pacing around my apartment doing the OMG's and shreeking.

Yesterday, I was enjoying my day off like any other person, cleaning and vacuuming. I knew that I had seen a June Bug on my floor in the part of this apartment that they like to refer to the "Dinning Room", but what I found next was a surprise to me that I was not ready for. Are YOU ready?!?!?! Here it is.

Now, if you are anything like me, your first question is WTF?!?!?! I can only assume this is my Mother's Day present from my loving cat Mary Jane. Why doesn't she understand that I don't enjoy these kinds of gifts? So my next question to myself, after wiggling and wanting to scream was, is it a mouse or a bird? I've never seen a mouse with a beak or a bird with a tail. So, with the great technology that we are blessed with today, I send a picture via BlackBerry to my mother. This morning, after she showed it to my father, and I have a feeling there were some laughs involved, they came to terms that this creature is either a mole or a shrew. Either way it is not a house pet and it was tossed off my balcony after I poked it a couple times with the lunchable box I scooped it up with, to make sure M.J. at least killed it before she brought it in. I have no idea what I was going to do even if it was alive, because when I found it M.J. was no where to be found because of the noises of the vacuum.

I don't want to brag, but I think this creature is worse than the bugs and slugs that my cousin has found. Being the nurse that I am, I'm worrying if this thing has brought diseases into my living quarters. I have contemplated having a hazmat team come into my apartment, gear and all. I have checked all corners and counters to make sure this is the only thing that is hidden in my place. Well, I have checked them multiple times really.

Now that I have the hebe-gebies all over again. I am going to do some laundry and hope that there isn't anything else lingering around this small apartment. If there is I'm sure that you will hear the shreeks all the way to Arizona!

Say It Ain't So.

My roommate had showed me this article a while back. At first I was in denial, then I realized.... it is so.

Not only does she make the "crying meow", I do blame myself for this because when I lived by myself I did talk to her quite a lot. She also wakes me up EVERY MORNING at 5:30a because that is her breakfast time, this is a break because when she was little it was 4am and there was always a paw whacking me in the face. Then she goes out on the balcony (yes she is still allowed after the mishap) for her morning breath of fresh air. If I close my door, she will claw at my thresh hold until I open it and give her what she wants. She even follows me into the bathroom EVERY TIME I GO. I swear the moment she hears a droplet hit the stool she comes running in, she could just miss out on something. She is like a furry toddler, my furry toddler!

Summer Time Summer Time

Ahhhhhh... what a relief. The heaters are off and so are the snow boots.

This is the season for itsy bitsy tinny winey yellow poka-dot bikini's, tans (burns), flip flops, bright colors and good times.

So far this summer I have had multiple bbq's, beers, entertainment and ahhhh naps!

I have to brag, although I'm not the best in house cook, I'm a bad ass by blood at the grill. So far the flames have cooked some steaks, chicken, cabbage, zucchini, squash, pine apple and last night asparagus and fish. No one in Johnson County can do it like me! Men are impressed and women are jealous.

Other things I have been up to this summer: summer classes. 3 classes in 7 weeks. Time is flying by. I think I have done homework everyday since they have started. All online, thank goodness. I print off all the info I need and then write out the assignments @ work.

Friday the 26th of June, my new roomie, Jose and one of our friends from FHSU, went to a show called Quixotic. It was on the line of the Circus Oley that is in Las Vegas. Its based out of KC and we actually know 2 of the people that work on the production from FHSU so we got to go to the after party. The show can be taken as a love story, as it is mostly ballet with some rope performers and a couple of other aerial acts. The main man had fallen in love with 2 women, one good the other evil. All I can say was this is an awesome show!

At the party, which was sponsored by some kind of vodka and KC's Boulevard Beer Co., liquor and beer was free! I think they went through 6 or so CASES of vodka by 1 am. I was the DD so I only had 1 beer. Plus we had been walking around on the Plaza before the show and the combo of my shoes and the humidity gave me a blister the size of a quarter or bigger. I still made it the rest of the night and the after party went on @ 10404 #203! Good times, noodle salad.

All in all. Its been a bitchin summer! I hate the heat but love the activities. These couple of days we have had a "break" from the Kansas heat. I saw a report on the news the other day that said it has rained all but 9 days in June in KC. LOVE IT! Still really sticky.

What else could make this summer better than little baby cuddles also. What a gift!

One last thing. Lets give up a moment of silence to the king, Michael Jackson. Still can't believe he is gone.

Good times, noodle salad.

9 Lives

Yes I know my last blog was about Miss Jane, but oh well. Friday, little miss thing, decided to try and fly or something.

My friend Tiffany was at my apt all day watching TV b/c she only has a few channels through the cable boxes and I have basic cable (free!!!!!!) so she didn't want to lounge at her place all day with nothing to do. She left around 4p to go take care of some things before she went to work for the night. My roommate and I got home from work around 5:15. With in that hour Mary Jane had decided she had enough with my apartment and took a dive. I came in and she usually greats me at the door so I started to look for her. I looked in my room, bathroom and closet. No where. I looked in my roommates room and bathroom. Still no kittie. Kitchen. Nope. So I went on my balcony and called for her. I could hear her so Jose, the new roommate, got up and looked on the roof because I have caught her trying to maneuver up there before. Nope. The only other place would be 3 stories down. We went to the back and started looking for her. We could hear her but couldn't see her. She was hiding in some weeds behind my apt. I picked her up and she instantly clung to me. Poor girl.

I really don't know if she jumped or not because I had Maggie for the weekend while Michele and Rich were in Osborne. I figure they were just playing and some how Mary Jane ended up on the ground 3 stories lower. I have been in my apt for over a year and she has never tired to jump off the balcony.

Once inside she went straight to hide under my bed. She couldn't keep her eyes open and it began to really worry me. Of course it had to happen after all but the ER vet offices were closed. I had put pressure on her belly and pulled on her legs to see if she would react and she didn't but I still couldn't risk it.

I took her in and the vet by the name of Susan Weis took care of her. She said all she had was a scratch on her gums and that she was a VERY lucky little girl. They gave her a little pain shot and she was off to rest at home. She is doing fine now and is moving and shaking like nothing ever happened. I think it knocked a little bitchyness out of her because she has been pleasant since! What would I do with out my girl?
